Student loan sold to a collection agency and now that I have started paying my credit has not improved. Why?

I defaulted on a student loan a while back and it was sold to a collections agency. I am now paying the collection agency (have been for 11months) but my credit report shows that the student loans are a “derogartory”. Is there any way to get credit (no pun intended) for the fact that I have been paying this loan off for the past 11 months?
