Is it possible to get a student loan from a bank without a cosigner?

By admin | January 21, 2012

Katastic asked:

I need to get a student loan for school for around $40,000, but I have no one to cosign for me. Can I get a bank to cosign? Is there any other options for me to get a loan without having to have a cosigner? I really need help!
I am 22 almost 23

It is possible, you may need collateral or a down payment. You at least have to have decent credit for that amount.
Call a few different local banks or go in and ask!

Not unless you have great credit and a great job for over a year.

You can get one if you have awesome credit along with a beautiful job. Which if you had that why would you need the loan or to go to school in the first place. So I guess the answer is yes….but no. :)

No. You do not need a cosigner to get a student loan. Some banks will make your interest rate slightly higher if you do not have a cosigner but it is usually not too bad. You can (and should) also shop around at different banks and find who will give you the lowest interest rate.

Fill out the FASFA. Government loans are much better. A cosigner is someone who will pay your loan back if you don’t. Since school is not a real object that they can take back and resell if you don’t pay. They will need something of value in case you don’t pay.
